40 YEARS FIGHTING STRONG

This year marks 40 years since Chief Instructor Kelly KB first stepped onto the mat. Four decades. That number carries weight – not just because of the time, but because of everything packed into it: the sweat, the injuries, the breakthroughs, and relentless repetition.

“I didn’t get into martial arts for longevity, I got into it because something about it grabbed me by the gut, and I never found a reason to stop. I still haven’t,” says Kelly. “Martial arts isn’t just something I do. It’s part of who I am. It’s the one constant that’s been with me through the majority chapters of my life.”

Kelly gave up kicking a few years ago; her body just couldn’t keep up with the demands anymore. But she didn’t walk (or limp!) away. She adjusted. These days, her martial arts training consists of a mix of air work, sparring and bag smacking like it’s a ritual: “There’s nothing fancy about it. Just me, my fists, and the discipline to keep going.”

It’s physical, yes, but it’s mental too. Emotional. Spiritual. It’s the therapy Kelly never knew she needed until she started: “It’s stripped-back, raw, and honest work – and I love it. There’s something about the rhythm of striking, the connection between breath and body, that keeps me sane. I couldn’t picture a life without it. I don’t train because I ‘should.’ I train because I must.”

Teaching has become a vital outlet for Kelly; being able to pass on what she’s learned over four decades is a gift. Watching her students and all who came before them grow and evolve, impassions her. Sharing her expertise with her students certainly helps keep her fire lit.

“Whether you are brand new or years into your martial arts training, thanks for walking this path with me,” says Kelly. “I respect you for being willing to show up, work hard, and keep learning. That’s what it’s all about. Let’s keep moving forward. One punch, one kick, one block at a time.”
