BECOMING MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED

Can we develop qualities such as energy, drive, confidence and motivation, or are we simply born with them? It’s a question that touches on the relationship between who we believe we are and who we have the potential to become, and one that has a particular relevance to martial arts training.

KB member Zuzanna reflected on this in a message to Chief Instructor Kelly (KB), writing: “It’s easy to fall into the feeling that ‘this is just how I am,’ especially when changing feels scary or difficult… But I think those very qualities we struggle with can be the most exciting ones to nurture, because they shape us into who we want to become.”

Some people naturally seem to exude energy, confidence or charisma, while others may appear more reserved. Yet martial arts training teaches us that our qualities are not simply predetermined; they are expressed through action, practice and presence. The dojo is a place to develop not just technique, but how we show up to the world.

As Kelly (KB) said: “Positive energy and intentional body language are not traits reserved for a select few. They are cultivated through awareness and repetition. Martial arts shows us that who we are in the dojo is not a mask, nor is it separate from our identity. It is a deliberate expression of our best selves.”

Zuzanna also observed that many of KB’s Black Belts “weren’t planning to grade at all when they first started, at least not until someone encouraged them.” This is an important reminder that progress doesn’t always begin with a clear destination in mind. Many accomplished martial artists simply started training and continued to show up. Consistency, commitment and a willingness to act even without certainty shaped them into people their past selves might never have imagined becoming.

Growth does not require a fully formed plan or innate talent. It requires engagement, patience and practice. Every KB Kickboxing class in central London offers KB members an opportunity to learn, develop and discover what they are capable of achieving.

As Zuzanna wrote, “the most important step is becoming someone our past selves would be amazed by.” The dojo embodies this principle. Every time members train, they are not simply performing movements; they are also developing character, energy and presence. They are discovering that who they are is not fixed and that they may be capable of more than they allow themselves to believe.

“It is inspiring to be part of a community where growth continues beyond expectation, and where individuals, regardless of their starting point, can shape who they become through dedication, presence and practice,” said Kelly (KB).
