WHY LEARN SELF-DEFENCE?

Self-defence is more than just a skill—it’s a transformative tool for personal safety, confidence, and mental and physical well-being. As KB Senior Instructor Dee explains, “Learning self-defence can be important for many reasons, including safety, confidence, physical health, mental health, awareness, and discipline.” Whether you are a complete beginner or have years of experience, self-defence is an essential skill that can benefit everyone, and should be regularly practised to keep the techniques fresh and in your muscle memory.

Why should you learn self-defence? The primary goal of KB Self Defence classes is to help individuals protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations. Dee says, “self-defence can help you avoid physical attacks and navigate dangerous situations.” Indeed, the emphasis is on avoidance and only fighting as a last resort. The techniques taught at KB Self Defence classes help students become more aware of their surroundings and more able to identify potential threats before they escalate.

But beyond safety, learning self-defence is great for self-confidence. “Self-defence training can help you feel more confident in your abilities and in general, in all areas of life.” Dee says. Knowing that you can rely on yourself in difficult situations can make a huge difference in how you carry yourself daily.

Kelly FN says, “My favourite aspect of self-defence is how simple techniques can be effective. We’re taught how body mechanics work, for example to escape from a larger attacker.” Ruth echoes this sentiment, adding, “The body mechanics show how being smaller doesn’t mean you can’t act! Being able to try the techniques really demonstrates how it works.”

Jess sums it up perfectly: “Self-defence is at the root of martial arts, and it’s very empowering to learn. You’ll take away effective techniques and tips for personal safety, while learning about body mechanics and getting an endorphin boost from the drills. It’s very interesting and fun.”
