At KB Fitness, one concern comes up time and time again, especially from those new to training or thinking about starting.
“What if I slow others down?”
Many people arrive at our Kickboxing classes in London feeling self-conscious, unsure of their ability and concerned that they might hold back someone more experienced. But the reality inside our classes is very different.
As Chief Instructor Kelly KB explains, this idea is simply a myth: “One myth I hear from time to time is that working with a lower grade somehow ‘slows down’ a higher grade’s progress. Let’s set the record straight: in our school, nothing could be further from the truth.”
At KB Fitness, training is built on a clear and deliberate ethos created by Kelly KB: higher grades actively help lower grades as part of their own development. This isn’t just about being supportive – it’s a proven way to improve.
“When you guide someone less experienced, you’re forced to break movements down, explain them clearly and adjust your own technique so it’s correct under scrutiny. This deepens your understanding in a way that simply ‘going hard’ all the time never could,” says Kelly KB.
In fact, all KB Assistant Instructors value this role highly. Teaching and supporting others allow them to see each lesson from a different perspective, reinforcing their own learning in a way that regular training alone cannot.
For beginners, this means something important.
You are not holding anyone back.
“By working with beginners, the more experienced students are improving their own control, precision and adaptability – skills essential at advanced levels. It’s a valuable training opportunity.”
Even when paired with someone newer, higher grades continue to train effectively. They refine their techniques and challenge themselves in different ways. It’s not less training; it’s simply a different kind of training.
And that’s where real progress happens.
So, if you’ve ever hesitated to join a martial arts class, or found yourself worrying about your level, remember this:
You are not a burden – you’re a partner.
“They help you grow and you help them grow. That’s how we build skill, community and strength together,” reassures Kelly (KB).
At KB Fitness, progress isn’t about keeping up. It’s about training together and getting better, one step at a time.
