For James, joining KB Fitness marked a new beginning. After years of battling PTSD and struggling with his physical and mental health, he decided to take a bold step forward. “In mid-2023, I moved countries and changed careers, essentially starting over. It was a fresh start, and as 2024 began, I made a new year’s resolution to give martial arts another try.”
Walking into his first KB Kickboxing class, James admits he was nervous. But what he found at KB Fitness was a welcome surprise. “The instructors work tirelessly to counterbalance the inherent aggression of martial arts with a positive environment. Don’t get me wrong, a supportive environment still feels strange to me after the aggression I’d been used to, but it’s a vast improvement on the dark thoughts that used to plague me. It’s what made me stay, and it’s what keeps me coming back.”
James quickly embraced the training, finding solace and structure in the martial arts journey. For him, grading was not just about achieving belts but also about measuring progress in a tangible way. “One thing I’ve always liked about martial arts is that there’s no skill-ceiling. You can always improve. Grading is a milestone – a way to mark progress – not about passing or failing but about the journey itself. And that journey will take as long as it needs to.”
The impact of training on James’ life has been profound. “Eighteen months ago, I was a 5’8” guy riddled with regrets, guilt, and shame, weighing nearly 100kg. I was almost as wide as I was tall. Now, I’m 35kg lighter, and I cannot remember when I was last in better health and spirits.”
James’ story is an inspiring example of how martial arts can change lives, far beyond the physical skills learned in the dojo. It’s a journey of rebuilding confidence, health, and a positive outlook on life. As he says, “There’s always room to grow, and each moment of the journey is invaluable.”
