This week marked an exciting milestone for KB Fitness London as James taught his first KB Kickboxing class as part of the KB teaching team.
It was a significant moment not only for James, but also for the continued evolution of the school. For more than 27 years, Chief Instructor Kelly (KB) has always believed in supporting students as they progress from beginners, through the grading system, and eventually into roles where they can inspire and support others. Sometimes this means becoming a KB instructor.
Although the school had male instructors in its early years, the teaching team had been women-led for many years. In 2023, Kelly (KB) relaxed that long-standing approach when she invited Ryan to join the team, recognising that the right people to represent the school’s values are those who demonstrate commitment, loyalty, passion and the ability to support others.
After achieving his KB Black Belt in December 2025, James was also invited, becoming the latest instructor to progress from student to teacher. He now joins KB Senior Instructor Jess and KB Instructors Jane, Ryan, Sonya, Yasmin and Zuzanna.
When James was asked if he would like to teach, he was surprised by the invitation but saw it as an exciting opportunity.
“There were a lot of reasons I said yes to teaching – for starters, I was very flattered to be asked! Kelly mentioned the possibility during my black belt speech and needless to say it was a big surprise!”
James also recognised the importance of joining a teaching team that has always been a key part of KB Kickboxing London’s identity.
“The teaching team has always been predominantly female and I’ve always respected that as part of the school’s identity, so as a man it was a huge compliment to be invited to join – it showed me that Kelly trusts me to be a role model for newer members of the school.”
Having spent years learning martial arts himself, James was also excited to experience a completely different side of training.
“I’ve never really taught anything in my life so I saw it as a new challenge and an opportunity for growth, which is a great thing to have after getting your black belt as it’s a completely new and different side of martial arts to explore.”
Although James admitted he was nervous before teaching his first KB Kickboxing class, he quickly found the students’ attitude helped him settle into the role.
“Fortunately, the students all had such a positive attitude, and I had some great assistance from Kelly FN and Sonya. Everyone was very responsive and took on board feedback very readily, and they all seemed to have a great time which is what I was hoping for.”
Kelly (KB) said: “I’m incredibly proud of how my teaching team has evolved over the years. We have a group of dedicated instructors who genuinely care about helping our members progress, and it’s fantastic to see students like James develop into people who can support and inspire others.”
James’ teaching debut represents another important step in the story of KB Fitness London – a martial arts school where students are encouraged not only to achieve their own goals, but also to help others achieve theirs.
