As International Women’s Month comes to a close, it’s a timely reminder to talk about something that matters all year round: personal safety.
While conversations around safety often become more prominent during International Women’s Day and throughout March, self-defence is not just important for women, for one month out of the year – it’s a life skill that can benefit everyone, at any time. We never know how, when or where a threatening situation might happen, but we can do our best to become more aware, more prepared, and more confident in how we respond.
At KB Fitness, self-defence is about awareness, confidence, decision-making under pressure, and knowing how to create the opportunity to get away safely. The goal is not to “win a fight” – it’s to protect yourself and escape danger.
Companies across the UK are recognising just how important that is. Employers are increasingly thinking about the safety and wellbeing of their teams beyond the workplace, especially when staff are travelling to and from work and may feel vulnerable at certain times of day. That’s why more businesses are now booking corporate self-defence classes to help their teams learn practical skills, feel empowered, and build confidence in real-life situations. Many have even returned for follow-up sessions, giving their teams the chance to keep practising, developing their skills, and reinforcing what they’ve learned.
KB Corporate Self Defence classes are designed to be realistic and supportive. Participants work with partners and use pads for controlled contact work, taking it in turns to bring situations to life in a safe environment. They practise techniques in a way that reflects real-life scenarios, while taking care of one another during the sessions.
Classes also cover practical advice that can make a real difference in everyday life. As KB Instructor Ryan explains, “Avoid dark alleys. Don’t walk around with headphones as that blocks your sense of what is going on around you. If you feel unsafe, walk into a shop.” Participants are also encouraged to use their voice, shout for help, and focus on getting away safely if danger arises.
The impact of this kind of training is often immediate. After a recent corporate session, Madelaine from PA Consulting said: “KB Fitness hosted our Corporate Self Defence Class for our female staff, and they were fabulous! Everyone felt so comfortable, engaged and that they learned a lot from the session.” Robin from Wild Cosmetics shared: “The class was not only informative but incredibly empowering… we walked away with practical skills.”
That’s what self-defence should do – help people feel stronger, more capable, and more prepared.
Whether you want to feel more confident yourself, learn a valuable life skill, or give your team an empowering and practical experience, self-defence training can make a real difference.
