Chief Instructor Kelly KB recently shared her thoughts on the importance of consistency in martial arts training and why showing up, even on the difficult days, can make all the difference.
Drawing on her own experience, Kelly said:
“Not showing up is always an option, but it is the worst one you can take. I train every morning at 8am, and I can tell you honestly that sometimes, I do not always have my usual energy. Some days I feel heavy, flat, even defeated before I have started. But I never allow myself to listen to those excuses, and I never give myself the day off; I always show up.”
Kelly said this commitment is one of the reasons she earned her black belt and why others can earn theirs too. She said that reaching black belt isn’t about personality type, or about being the loudest in the room, the most confident or even the most talented. Instead, it comes down to persistence; continuing to come back, standing up and putting one kick in front of the other.
She also highlighted that although some martial artists begin with natural ability, flexibility, discipline or previous experience, toughness can be taught, resilience can be built and discipline can be developed. Every time someone chooses to attend class instead of staying at home, they’re teaching themselves to become tougher. Every time they bow into the dojo when they’d rather be anywhere else, they’re building the habits that lead to black belt.
As Kelly put it:
“A black belt is not proof of who you were when you started, it is proof of who you became by refusing to give up.”
Kelly described consistency as the secret ingredient. A bad day feels better after class. When you’re tired, training in the martial arts wakes you up. When you’re sad, it brings you joy. When you’re stressed, it clears your mind. When you’re unfit, it makes you stronger. When you’re unfocused, it sharpens you. Every excuse for not coming to class can become a reason why you should.
She also highlighted the wider benefits of training in the martial arts consistently. The body becomes conditioned, the mind becomes disciplined, skills become refined and confidence becomes unshakable. Instead of being at the mercy of moods, energy levels or circumstances, people begin to master themselves. Martial arts training isn’t just about learning techniques; it’s about learning resilience, patience and the habit of showing up, especially when you don’t feel like it.
At KB Fitness in London, we see these lessons reflected in our dojo every week. We train the body, but we also train the will. Success comes not from turning up when it’s convenient, but from turning up when it isn’t. That’s where real growth happens.
Showing up is where progress begins. Book a free KB Kickboxing trial class today and take the first step towards becoming fitter, stronger and more confident.
