WHY SPAR?

Sparring is an exhilarating part of KB Kickboxing classes, where members get the chance to apply what they are learning with a partner. Sparring at KB is light contact, controlled and the space is supportive and encouraging. Unlike air or pad work, sparring allows students to test their technique against a moving opponent, helping them refine their timing and range, and boost their confidence. Many KB members have shared their experiences of sparring, reflecting on their initial feelings, their growth, and why they think beginners should give it a go.

Jess recalls how she felt when she began: “I started sparring after about 6 weeks of training. I was a bit nervous, but honestly so excited to get the full experience of kickboxing. I loved it right away.” Jess encourages newcomers to give it a try, emphasising that there’s no pressure to get everything right: “You aren’t expected to grasp it immediately, at all. You’re given the stepping stones to build up your skills and confidence.”

Phoebe echoed similar sentiments: “I remember being a bit nervous when I first started sparring, but it’s really fun. Everyone looks after you. And applying the lesson plan really helps with understanding what you’re doing, and why.”

Sparring is indeed key to better understanding the lesson plan. Bess highlighted this: “I love sparring! It’s great to apply the lesson plan and see it in action. I feel that it always cements a bit better if you can actually see the sparring application of the martial arts techniques. And I love when we get to freestyle and apply all the blocks and moves we’ve learned over the weeks.”

Ruth agrees: “Sparring definitely cements the lesson plan, that moment of seeing how it works in practice is so helpful. Sparring with higher grades is great too, all the black belts are so willing to give everyone tips on how to improve, not just take easy points from us! And it’s fun!”

Ryan also appreciates the practical benefits sparring offers: “Can’t recommend sparring enough, it takes your fitness to another level and actually landing shots and practising blocks helps to contextualise the lesson plans.”

Kickboxing sparring isn’t just about physical skills; it also challenges the mind. Many KB members love the mental exercise involved, including adapting to different sparring partners. Adam explained: “It gives you the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned, while also developing your martial arts skills with a constantly moving target. I also enjoy the strategic aspect; seeing what worked, what didn’t, and adapting the approach depending on your opponent.”

Kim shared a similar view, highlighting the mental sharpness sparring requires: “Adam’s comment resonated with me as I enjoy the mental exercise we get along with the physical exercise in reading our opponent, blocking or getting tapped and reacting. It’s a privilege to learn martial arts from someone as sharp and dedicated as Kelly.”

Neil also loves the strategic side of sparring: “Sparring is definitely my favourite part of class. I love the strategic element of sparring, looking for an opening and then scoring, applying different parts of the lesson plans and adapting to different people’s styles. I feel like I learned so much over the years from sparring with higher grades. Above all, it’s really fun, and really great for bonding with your fellow KB’ers.”

At KB Fitness, sparring is conducted in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere where all participants are welcomed and supported, from beginner to black belt. Bess expressed her appreciation for the positive environment: “Sparring at KB is safe and friendly, and all of the sparrers are super welcoming to people trying for the first time. I love how willing to help everyone is!”

For those considering sparring, the benefits are clear. Hafiza says: “Sparring is one of my favourite parts of class, being able to put into practice what we’ve been learning is very fulfilling and it’s always great fun, especially if you’re partnered with someone who is a higher grade than you. I love the practice of sharpening my blocks and trying to figure out how to get around someone else’s.”

Jess reassures beginners that they won’t be thrown in at the deep end: “You work as a team with whoever you’re sparring with. If they are new, you’ll be learning together. If they’re more experienced, they will take the best care of you to make sure you have a good time. You will be nurtured to realise you are capable of more than you might think. If you’re at all curious, set a goal and let’s get you sparring in 2025.”

Sparring is a chance to bring all the martial arts techniques, discipline, and focus together in a dynamic, supportive, and fun environment. Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, sharpen your skills, or simply have fun with your fellow KB members, sparring is an experience not to be missed.
