A short video of KB members sparring – with Chief Instructor Kelly KB explaining that sparring at KB Kickboxing is as safe as a contact sport can be – sparked an energising discussion on the school’s WhatsApp group. Students at every stage of their martial arts journey jumped in, sharing personal experiences that reveal what makes KB sparring unique.

Jess, a KB Black Belt, described her first experience as a complete beginner: “Did I feel nervous? Yes. Did I feel uncoordinated? Yes. Did I love it from my first try? YES. You won’t find a safer, more caring place to try a contact sport than KB.”

The contrast with other experiences was clear. Aditya, who trained in karate as a child, recalled: “People would look forward to sparring with someone less skilled. No padding and all. It would hurt. I hated karate sparring and it put me off for years – until I found KB.”

At KB martial arts classes, the approach couldn’t be more different. Zuzanna, a KB Brown Belt, explained: “We always keep it as safe as possible and look out for each other. Sparring with higher grades helped me learn so much when I was starting out.” KB Purple Belt, Ruth, who has trained in the martial arts at KB for over 15 years, remembered: “I sparred with Jess early on – she gave me tips throughout and made it fun, not intimidating.”

Phoebe, a KB Brown Belt with nine years’ experience, added: “When I started KB, I was nervous about sparring, worried I’d be thrown in with black belts. But it’s semi-contact and very controlled. We take care of each other here and once you get into sparring, you realise it’s fun!”

Even lower-grade students appreciate learning from more experienced partners. Alice, soon grading for her KB Orange Belt, said: “I sparred with James and Lloyd yesterday – they’re fast, sharp but gentle.” Kelly FN, KB Black Belt and school admin, highlighted the learning side: “It’s a great way to put into practice everything we do. You see the lesson plan click when you apply the techniques onto a partner.”

The discussion also acknowledged that other schools have different styles, often favouring heavier contact. At KB, the focus is on confidence, creativity, and steady skill development – a system that works for KB members. Even those who haven’t tried sparring yet are excited. Tina summed it up: “I can’t wait to spar – it looks so fun. This school is totally safe and professional.”

The WhatsApp conversation showed one thing clearly: at KB Fitness, sparring isn’t something to fear. It’s a way to grow, learn, and enjoy martial arts together. Whether you’re new to contact sports or returning after years away, at KB you’re welcome to start sparring as soon as you’re ready – safely, confidently, and with support every step of the way.
