KB Chief Instructor, Kelly Bunyan, likes to refer to hitting the pads as ‘smackage!’ The unifying sound of a room full of focused martial arts striking the pads is spectacular!
Pad work is such an integral part of our training system, that this aspect has been sorely missed over the past months. Recently, we have been hitting gloves, but it is not the same as smacking the pads!
When informed that pad work would be reinstated, the school’s WhatsApp group was set alight:
“Fantastic!!!! Can’t wait to hold an hit those pads!” Frederike
“Woohoo!!! What better news to start the day!!! Thanks for sharing!” Fotini
“Can’t wait! This is the best news!” Zuzanna
Partner work certainly changes the dynamic of the classes, compared to solitary training online. While the online classes have been brilliant and will continue to be so, pad work adds a different dimension to the kickboxing class in London, as the students get to work on their range, blocking and control once again.
Control is key; contact is solid but not heavy. All members are encouraged to remember that a person is attached to the focus mitt, and therefore they must take care of one another.
Many of the newer KB members, who joined over the past year, have never hit focus mitts. Dara is looking forward to the experience:
“I can’t wait to try pad work. I definitely want to make contact when I kick. Excited about pad work!”
KB Fitness cannot wait either. We embark on this new phase with renewed vigour and fire. It is certainly time to have all tools at our disposal to enable our members to become the best martial artists they can be. To do that, we need all components of our training.
