For Kelly, the power of a grading is guttural. It’s the displayed in the strength a student finds in the hardest moments, when they think they can’t give any more – but they do. It’s the moment they realise that there is no giving up.
“Those moments still move me,” says Kelly KB, KB Chief Instructor. “Even after having taught thousands of people over 27 years.”
Preparing for a grading takes dedication. “Train as if your grading is tomorrow,” Kelly often reminds her students. It’s a call to always bring passion to each class, to show respect for the art and for the instructors who guide them. While many people train in the martial arts for fitness – and martial arts is fantastic for that – the true essence of martial arts training reaches far beyond physical strength.
Alice says: “Grading in the martial arts is the hardest physical test I’ve ever had to do. It was my choice to do it, and I don’t regret it even for a moment because of how life-changing it is to realise my strength. To know that if I can do that, there’s nothing in my life that I won’t face with courage.”
It’s not the colour of the belt or the number of gradings completed that defines the experience. It’s the transformation students undergo along the way. They discover limits far beyond what they imagined, learn to prioritise themselves, and develop strength not just physically, but mentally. “It really changes your perspective of yourself, and of how you can respond to the challenges you face in life,” says Sonya.

Gradings crystallise the journey, turning months of preparation, sweat, and hard work into moments of self-discovery, resilience, and achievement.
