In this month’s KB Member Spotlight, we follow Surbhi’s journey at KB Fitness – a story of finding the right path, setting meaningful goals, and discovering how martial arts can enrich both body and mind.

Surbhi (on the left in the picture) first discovered KB Fitness almost by chance. “I was looking for a physical activity that wasn’t a gym class and just happened to come across KB Fitness at the Somers Town venue,” she recalls. What convinced her to give it a try was the option to attend a KB Kickboxing trial class before committing. That first Thursday session with Instructor Jess left a lasting impression. “Though I went in a bit unsure, I came out thinking that this was definitely something I could get into and enjoy.”

Surbhi just celebrated her 2nd KB Anniversary and in the past two years, Surbhi has achieved four KB Kickboxing belts and one KB Kung Fu sash – an impressive testament to her commitment and passion for martial arts. She credits the KB Instructors for helping her along the way: “Kelly, Jess, Dee (and all the other instructors) were extremely motivating and supportive, and that really helped me stick with martial arts.”

When Surbhi first stepped into the KB dojo, her goals were largely fitness related. She wanted to get fitter and lose some weight. But as her training progressed, those goals evolved. Now, she says, “I go in for my weekly dose of serotonin.” Martial arts training at KB has become as important for her mental health as it is for her physical wellbeing. “Being in the dojo for the hour or two means I can forget my day or week and focus all my energy on the lesson plan and training.”

What keeps her coming back, week after week, is the variety and structure of the classes. “I love that we get to do the basics but also try higher grade techniques through the week. For me, the changing lesson plan keeps things really interesting and has me looking forward to class each week.” She also celebrates the small but significant milestones that come with training: “The pride you feel when you have been trying to learn a move and it finally clicks is unbeatable – it was the diagonal hook kick for me.”

Grading has become another source of motivation for Surbhi. “I started grading because it looked fun but now I grade to push myself to get better and to stay on track with my progress. It’s a great goal to set and I know exactly what I am pushing towards and achieving.”

Reflecting on her journey so far, Surbhi says: “I am very grateful to have found the school and look forward to many more years of training!”

Her story is a wonderful reminder that every journey in martial arts is unique, and that the goals we set along the way can help us grow both inside and outside the dojo.

If you’re looking for a positive, motivating space to challenge yourself and experience the same sense of achievement that Surbhi describes, why not take the first step and book a KB Kickboxing trial class?
