This chapter of the KB Member Spotlight focuses on Timm, who has been part of the KB family for six years, balancing his martial arts training with family life.
When Timm first joined KB Fitness in autumn 2019, a few months before the world changed with COVID, he was looking for something new. “I was looking specifically for martial arts because I had done a bit of Taekwondo before I moved to London and quite liked it, so I joined the trial.” he says.
Timm admits he was never the most sporty person (“rather the opposite if you ask my teachers at school!”), but the welcoming and encouraging attitude of the KB instructors made all the difference and he says that is the main reason he joined KB.
Then came the pandemic. Like many, Timm had to adapt to a new way of training. “I participated in classes via Zoom, which was great fun, considering the little amount of interaction with people outside of work at that time,” he recalls. During this period of online training, KB Founder and Chief Instructor Kelly KB invited Timm to join the grading process. Timm says, “At this point I hadn’t really thought much about it, so I told myself, ‘Why not?, which I have never regretted since.”
Determined to make the most of the opportunity, Timm joined the KB Unlimited membership to prepare for his first grading. “The next week I was training like crazy! Three hours a week, what an improvement from zero hours before!” he says. Along the way, he didn’t even notice that he lost about five kilos, though the improvement in his fitness was clear.
Kickboxing, self-defence, and Kung Fu soon became part of Timm’s weekly routine. Life outside the dojo was also full of milestones: he got married and later became a father. “It was definitely a challenge to keep up kickboxing and ensure there’s visible progress, after becoming a father,” he says. “However, I continued my journey, thanks to my wife’s support and Kelly, Dee and everyone else from the KB family keeping me motivated!”
Even now, with a busy life, Timm remains dedicated to his training. “Tuesday is ‘holy’ – my colleagues at work have accepted me leaving early every week. My son loves playing with my head guard and kickboxing gloves and joins me when I’m training at home. Four to five hours of kickboxing every week is the new standard, and I’m looking forward to the next grading!”
Timm’s journey shows how consistency and community support can keep your training alive through life’s biggest changes. If you’re considering starting your own martial arts journey, take the first step like Timm did – book your KB Kickboxing trial and discover what you can achieve.
