CONSISTENCY IS KEY

In the world of martial arts, progress is rarely instant. Behind every graceful movement, powerful strike, and confident stance lies one essential factor: consistent training.

At KB Fitness, consistent training is recognised as one of the most important foundations for progress. Chief Instructor Kelly KB explains: “The difference between those who achieve black belt excellence and those who plateau often comes down to one simple habit: showing up, even when you don’t feel like it.”

This message has resonated strongly with students. While we may be full of energy and motivation on some days, others come with challenges – busy schedules, poor weather, or low spirits. Continuing to train during those tougher moments is what truly shapes a martial artist, both physically and mentally.

Kim, who’s been training at KB for 4 years, shared how she supports others who arrive lacking motivation, or feeling low: “I always encourage people that come in looking flat by saying that this is the best time to train because they are doing something beneficial for their mind and body, and changing the trajectory of a difficult day.”

The benefits of pushing through low motivation are echoed by Yasmin, who said: “It’s so true that showing up sometimes is the biggest challenge, but I can confidently say I never regret showing up once I’ve done it.”

For many, consistency is what bridges the gap between early effort and long-term achievement. Ruth observed that regular attendance has been the biggest influence on her progress: “I’m definitely not naturally talented, so it’s all down to regularly showing up and benefitting from the great teaching and the encouragement of my fellow students. I also know that on days when I don’t feel like training, I will get the benefits if I do, which is an added motivation.”

She added: “I love that KB caters to everyone and helps all of us get better at training and building that technique and that character.”

For others, martial arts training offers not only progress, but also a sense of normality and mental reset during difficult times. Timm described how returning to class after illness can be challenging, but worthwhile: “Usually, I try one catch up class at home and if I feel fine the next day, I’ll continue training. It’s always the tiredness after a cold which keeps motivation low, but the simple knowledge from experience that there’s no more effective way to get out of it but actually train, provides enough reason to come back.”

He also highlighted the supportive community at KB Fitness: “One thing I don’t feel, thanks to the lovely way people in the dojo treat me and each other, is afraid to fail when I come back in worse physical shape than before.” And beyond the physical benefits, he added: “In a certain way, coming to classes is relaxing, giving me some time off from worrying about work or family.”

The positive cycle created by consistent training was summed up by Adam, who has been training in the martial arts at KB for 10 years: “It’s amazing how much you improve when you get into the habit of training regularly. Your fitness and stamina increase, which makes it easier to keep up with the drills, kick high, maintain your guard… and that in turn boosts your confidence.”

Whether the goal is to improve fitness, build confidence, or work towards a black belt, the path forward is the same: keep showing up. Each class, each small effort, adds up to meaningful progress. As Kelly KB reminds students: “Showing up is half the battle. Keep training, stay consistent, and watch how far we can go together.”
