MORE THAN JUST A HOBBY

At KB Fitness, our members often share why they decided to start training martial arts for the first time. It may have been for fitness, strength, to meet new people, to learn a new skill… or simply because a friend convinced them to come to a trial class together! For our students, no matter their reasons for starting, martial arts training has become more than just a hobby or a way to stay fit—it has become a path to personal transformation.

KB instructor Jess, who has been training at KB Fitness for over 20 years, originally joined “because martial arts looked cool.” From a relatively trivial initial reason, she became addicted to the personal growth and transformational power of martial arts – both for herself, and seeing it in others. “One of the best moments of self-discovery is finding that roar, that inner fighter within yourself,” Jess reflects. “Seeing it in others, especially in the kickboxing grading dojo, still gives me goosebumps! There’s nothing else like it.”

For Neil, fitness was the main driver, but he shared Jess’ reasoning that kickboxing looked like a cool thing to try. “I decided to try martial arts to get fit after an illness,” he shares. “I also thought it looked cool and wanted to try it. I had no expectations of grading, but I soon got hooked!”

Phoebe’s story echoes a similar sentiment. As someone who always wanted to try martial arts but didn’t know where to start, she took the plunge one day, tried a KB Kickboxing London class and hasn’t looked back since. “Nothing beats the KB buzz! You can definitely feel the energy shared by members and instructors at every kickboxing class!”

Kelly FN, who wasn’t particularly sporty or into health and fitness before joining, walked into the KB Kickboxing dojo with a mixture of curiosity and nervousness. “I wanted to do martial arts because the moves seemed cool, and I wanted to increase my speed, reflexes, and flexibility. I had no idea how much more mentally strong and confident it would make me.”

For all these members, KB Fitness has become more than just a place to learn KB Kickboxing, KB Kung Fu, or KB Self-Defence. It’s a community where individuals discover their inner fire, a strength they didn’t know they had. As Kelly FN puts it, “If you are open to being taught and accept feedback from your instructors, your life can truly be changed as what we learn in the dojo transfers to daily life too.”

Kelly Bunyan (KB), the founder and Chief Instructor of KB Fitness, has created a space where members can find their inner fighter and grow, not just as martial artists, but as individuals. It’s clear that for many, the decision to try martial arts has been life-changing, leading to a deeper sense of confidence, resilience, and empowerment.
