Nearly 30 years ago, Chief Instructor Kelly KB opened a small Kickboxing school with no grand plan for what it might become. Today, KB Fitness in London has helped thousands of people build confidence, develop resilience and discover strengths they never knew they had through martial arts.
Kelly shares that journey in the video “The History of KB Fitness | Changing Lives Through Martial Arts,” reflecting on the experiences, people and values that have shaped the school since it first opened its doors in 1998.
The story begins much earlier. Kelly started training in martial arts as a child in 1985, eventually helping to teach students junior to her.
“The truth is that I never set out to build a martial arts school. I trained because I loved it.”
That passion became the foundation of KB Fitness. What started as KB Kickboxing in Borehamwood expanded into Central London just one year later, growing into a thriving martial arts school where people of all ages and abilities could train in Kickboxing, Kung Fu and Self-Defence.
Although the school has grown and evolved over the years, its purpose has remained the same.
“Helping people become the best version of themselves is the reason I run my school. Martial arts offer far more than punches and kicks- it’s spiritual.”
For some members, that has meant earning a Black Belt or Black Sash. For others, it has meant overcoming anxiety, improving their fitness, learning practical self-defence, or simply finding a positive, supportive community. Every journey is different, but everyone is encouraged to progress at their own pace.
Beginners are welcomed into classes with other beginners, supported by two instructors every step of the way. As confidence and skills grow, students who wish to continue have a clear grading pathway, providing achievable goals while developing both physically and mentally.
The video has prompted a heartfelt response from members; many of whom said it captures what KB Fitness has always been about.
“Inspirational! Such a fabulous and uplifting history of your school. And a wonderful and generous purpose and mission at its core.” – Beth
For Kim, the video revealed the person behind the school.
“Not me tearing up. What a touching glimpse into the heart of our Chief Instructor. You are such a beautiful human, Kelly.”
Senior Instructor Jess Baker, who first joined KB Fitness as a student, said:
“It’s really wonderful. Thank you Kelly for sharing this. And for creating our school, it’s such a unique community. Your story really shows that we never know where life will take us, but if we believe in ourselves, keep showing up, and have a kind and generous attitude then we can find our place and make a difference.”
Even newer members have enjoyed learning more about the school’s journey.
“Such an amazing video!! I absolutely loved watching it!! So interesting for me, as a ‘new beginner’, to know the whole story of the school.” – Oxana
Nearly three decades on, the mission remains unchanged: to create a friendly martial arts community where people are encouraged, challenged and supported to become the best version of themselves.
