At KB Fitness in London, martial arts training has always been about far more than strength alone.
Chief Instructor Kelly (KB) has trained in the martial arts for over 41 years, beginning in a full-contact environment under five-time world kickboxing champion Kevin Brewerton.
“I grew up in a full-contact school,” Kelly explains. “From the age of 11, I was sparring with grown men. You learn quickly in that environment… or you don’t last.”
Kelly says the experience shaped her both physically and mentally, building “the kind of confidence that carries you through life, not just training.”
While earning a black sash in Kung Fu and a black belt in Kickboxing, Kelly developed the experience that would eventually lead her to open KB Fitness in London. But despite her full-contact background, she chose a different direction for her own school.
“My classes are designed to be just as toughening – physically and mentally,” Kelly says. “But they do it without the goal of trying to knock training peers out. Standards aren’t about how hard you hit someone.”
Instead, KB Fitness focuses on light-contact training built around speed, control, technical quality and long-term development. Students are encouraged to push themselves in a structured and disciplined environment, with an emphasis on longevity, control and technical development.
That approach has had a lasting impact on countless students over Kelly’s 28+ years of teaching. When a recent video highlighting Kelly’s 41+ years of martial arts training was shared with KB members, it was met with heartfelt messages from students reflecting on the positive influence Kelly has had on their lives, both as martial artists and beyond.
“Your teachings on control, respect, and mental wellbeing have played a massive role in allowing us to sustain and continue to enjoy our martial arts journeys over the years,” said KB Instructor Ryan. “The KB philosophy truly supports longevity.”
“What a long history we’ve had. 28 years and counting – with you at the helm, Kelly,” added KB Instructor Jess. “Thank you for continuing to dedicate yourself to our development and growth, in martial arts and beyond.”
Students also praised Kelly’s technical ability, intensity and precision following the release of the latest training video.
“The intensity of your training is a real inspiration,” said Anna.
“It’s amazing to see just how beautiful the technique is, despite how fast you are!” wrote Ruth.
“Love watching such precision – a great example of knowing your range!” added Beth.
For Kelly, martial arts training has always been about helping people grow stronger, more confident and more capable – both inside and outside the dojo.
