For Jenny (third from the right in the photo), her journey from beginner to KB Kickboxing Black Belt and KB Kung Fu Black Sash is a testament to her determination, and passion for the martial arts. From the moment she stepped into the dojo, Jenny had a clear goal: to achieve the highest standard. Her story reminds us why our members dedicate themselves so fully to training, and why every step of the journey is precious.
Jenny’s introduction to KB Fitness martial arts classes came at a pivotal time in her life. Having just moved to London to begin her career as a junior doctor, she was looking for something to ground her amid the chaos of a demanding job. What she found was more than just a workout; it was a transformative experience.
“Training at KB Fitness has changed my life in more ways than I can put into words,” Jenny reflects. “I’ve gained beautiful friendships and a deeper understanding of myself. Kung Fu, with its meditative qualities, became a source of peace during difficult times, helping me cope with grief and work challenges. Martial arts training is far more rewarding than going to the gym or for a run.”
Indeed, martial arts holds so many physical and mental benefits: increased strength, better sleep, confidence and the ability to manage stress.
From the outset, Jenny was determined to earn her black belt – a goal that Kelly, KB Fitness’s Chief Instructor, describes as rare for someone to articulate so early on. Jenny’s drive stemmed from her love for the art of kickboxing: “I wanted to push myself to achieve a higher level because of the combination of strength, finely tuned skills, and self-discovery that martial arts demands. It’s far more challenging and rewarding than training for a marathon, teaching you about resilience and grit.”
The journey wasn’t without its sacrifices. Jenny recalls adjusting her work schedule, making deals with colleagues, and rearranging her life to prioritise training. “Friends and family had to work around my schedule, but they could see the sense of achievement I was gaining. Having them at my black belt grading to cheer me on was incredible.”
The support of fellow black belts at KB Fitness also played a crucial role. “Not many people outside martial arts truly understand what it takes to reach this level, which is why the camaraderie and encouragement from others in the school are invaluable,” Jenny explains.
Her journey spanned years of personal and professional growth. By the time she achieved her black sash in KB Kung Fu in 2020, Jenny had transitioned from junior doctor to GP, gotten married, and was expecting her first child. “It’s quite lovely to look back and see how my life evolved alongside my martial arts training. Training in the martial arts at KB has given me self-worth, confidence, strength, and a deeper understanding of my mental resilience – lessons that help me thrive both inside and outside the dojo.”
For Jenny, reaching KB Black Belt standard wasn’t the end of the journey but a milestone on a path of continuous growth. She cherishes the journey itself and encourages others to embrace the process. “Each moment is precious, and what you learn along the way is invaluable – not just as a martial artist, but as a person.”
